Ah yes, the blank page, how it taunts us with its empty whiteness and smartly ruled lines, smug and judgemental, intimidating and unforgiving, saying to us, 'Call yourself a writer? You can't even make a start!'
Don't listen to it.
Look up my page of prompts and start scribbling all over that paper. I also post them daily on my Facebook page.
A writing prompt can be as simple as 'I remember ...' , as way-out as 'Tell me everything you know about sausage casings ...' or as evocative as 'The smell of ... reminds me of ...' (fill in the blanks), but I can almost guarantee that if you take one, set yourself three or five minutes to write, words will come .. and once the deadlock is broken, more will follow.
Prompts are very handy for building writing muscle too: the more you do, the stronger you get, the more agile your imagination becomes, and many more possibilities open up, doorways to ideas for longer projects or topics for further writing.
You never quite know where a prompt will take you.
We say, 'Phooey to you, blank page! We are armed to the teeth to deal with your high-and-mighty rubbish.'
Prompts away!
