The Summer Writing Rev-up
1. What is a Writing Rev-up?
It's an informal gathering of writers (no more than eight), of any skill level or stage of writing, at The Writing Place ( my writing studio in Arkles Bay, Whangaparaoa, Auckland), from 10.30am - 3pm, on a Sunday. The only fixed points in the day are: arriving and meeting over coffee and tea, and warming up with some timed exercises that I'll set, and sharing of work (optional - you can participate or just listen in) at the end of the day. The rest of the time is yours to use however you'd like and I'm on hand to help at any stage. It's a very flexible day.
2. I am a new writer - would I feel comfortable at the Rev-Up?
Absolutely. Writers at any stage of their writing are welcome to come along and enjoy the day. I take some extra one-to-one time with new writers, talking about their ideas and what they'd like to achieve with their writing. I specialise in working with new writers so the Rev-Up is the perfect opportunity to give something a try.
3. I have a project I'm working on so just need the time to write on my own - is this possible?
Of course. The Writing Place is set up to accommodate up to eight writers and there are private spaces for individual work. If you have work to get on with, we'll leave you to it and I'm always around if you need some help.
4. I don't like reading my work to others - can I still participate?
Absolutely. There is never any pressure to read your work aloud. When we do have a sharing session, you can sit in and listen, and constructive feedback to the author is always welcome. You may find after hearing the work of others, that you'd like to share. Hooray!
5. I've never written anything before but I want to - would a Rev-Up work for me?
Yes. Even if you just have an interest in writing, being around other writers for a day can be inspiring and motivating and you may find you'll come away with some ideas for getting started with your writing. I spend time during the day with those who are new, or just starting out, talking about writing and what you'd like to accomplish, helping to form those thoughts and ideas into action.
6. A one to one coaching session with you is included - what happens during a session?
A 15 minute session is included in the $45 charge for the day. This is especially valuable if you are working on a project and need some help to get past a roadblock, or to reinvigorate with some fresh ideas. If you're a new writer, or just have some thoughts about writing, we can discuss a way forward so you can make a start.
7. What do I bring with me?
Bring your writing materials (pen and paper, laptop, tablet etc), your work in progress (if you have some - doesn't matter at all if you don't ), a list of things you'd like to chat about with the group (or just me), and your lunch. There is a microwave and dishes/cutlery if you'd like to heat something up. It's very informal here. You can wander about, write outside or in, grab coffee or tea whenever you like. Make yourself at home.
